Election Commissioner embarrassed in foreign countries regarding women representation
A discussion was held at the Human Rights Commission today with the participation of Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya and the officials of the Human Rights Commission about holding free and fair elections.
Expressing his views regarding how the Human Rights Commission would be relevant regarding this matter, the Election Commissioner stated that the task of the Elections Commission is to hold a free and fair election while the Human Rights Commission has a broader responsibility to protect the fundamental rights of the people.
He also added that the Supreme Court has accepted the fact that the universal franchise is a fundamental right.
The Election Commission also responded to a question raised regarding the lack of women’s representation in the Sri Lankan political arena.
He added that in foreign meetings, they discuss about 3 key topics including the money power, media usage and gender equity.
And whenever the 3rd topic is taken to discussion, he would always make an excuse and attempt to leave the meeting, quoting the reason as he is embarrassed regarding the country’s women representation in the political arena.
