Independent commissions active after the 3rd of June: Minister Kirialla

Friday, 29 May 2015 - 14:12

Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella stated that there will be an opportunity to enforce the independent commissions after the 3rd of June.

The Leader of the House stated that this opportunity will arise after the 3 members from the civil society nominated to the constitutional council receive approval in parliament on the 3rd of June.

Upon receiving the approval for the members, the Constitutional Council will be activated, consequently leading to an opportunity to enforce the independent commissions immediately.

When a member of the Bribery commission resigned, the vacant position could not be filled as the Constitutional council was inactive at that time.

However, 3 members representing the civil society have been nominated for the constitutional council by now including Doctor Radhika Kumaraswami, Leader of Sarvodaya Movement Doctor A.T. Ariyaratne and former Judge of the Court of Appeal A. W. A Salaam.
