Update : Shiranthi Rajapakse questioned for two and half hours at Speakers official residence

The FCID has questioned former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa for over 2 and half hours this morning at Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa’s official residence.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa was summoned by FCID today to record a statement in connection with an alleged financial fraud of a bank account with regard to Siriliya Saviya project.

An NGO called Siriliya Saviya project had been initiated by former President’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa, and its financial transactions were made through an account maintained in Sudu-wella branch of the People’s Bank.

The FCID initiated investigations on certain misappropriations of this bank account maintained by Shiranthi Rajapaksa, and she was questioned today under the first phase of a series of investigations.

Journalists who had waited at the FCID since this morning were compelled to go empty handed as Shiranthi Rajapaksa did not turn out to the FCID.

Commenting on the change of venue, Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that a statement was recorded from Shiranthi Rajapaksa at a different location as a group of people behaved in an unruly manner in front of the FCID.

However, Shiranthi Rajapaksa’s media co-coordinator Anoma Weliwita confirmed that the FCID recorded a statement from Shiranthi Rajapaksa at Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa’s official residence.

Three persons named S. Rajapaksa, A.M.J.A. Kumari and K.K. Dissanayake have been authorized to withdraw cash from the Siriliya account maintained in Sudu-wella Branch of People’s Bank.

Newspapers had reported earlier that the addresses of these three persons had been mentioned as Carlton House, Tangalle.

The same newspapers reported that the national identity card number of S. Rajapaksa contained nine digits of number 2, while A.M.J.A. Kumari’s ID Number contained nine digits of number one.

Our news team enquired Shiranthi Rajapaksa’s Media co-coordinator Anoma Weliwita as to why such a peculiar number is used in a national identity card.

At the same time, our news team enquired about the punishment that should be meted out to those who use forged national identity cards.

The outstanding balance of Siriliya account is 43.8 million rupees.

Siriliya project has been registered with the National secretariat of registration of none governmental organizations under the Number 111201.

Siriliya Saviya has used – 011 4733200 - as its telephone number.

However when our news team made a call to this number, the person answered the call introduced the place as Presidents house.

Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Media coordinator said in a statement that it seems an error has occurred in entering data to the bank computer system, although the names and addresses of the three persons have been mentioned accurately.

The statement further stated that the three persons who signed the bank cheques are not impersonated officials, and they are still serving for the organization.
