A special political party meeting today
A special political party meeting would be held in parliament at 2.30 this afternoon.
When contacted, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody told our news team that the party leaders would discuss about the appointment of members to the constitutional council.
A parliament session has been called on Wednesday in order to pass the names of the three civil members to the constitutional council.
The party leaders meeting would discuss today about the matters to be taken for debate in parliament on Wednesday.
The Constitutional council to be set up under the 19th Amendment would consist of 10 members, and among them are 7 parliamentarians and 3 civil society members.
Accordingly, the Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader would be official representatives of the constitutional council.
Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa has been named as the Prime Minister’s representative while Opposition’s Chief Organizer John Seneviratne has been appointed as the Opposition Leader’s representative.
Patali Champika Ranawaka has been appointed to the constitutional council as the representative of the President.
TNA leader R. Sampandan has been appointed as the representatives of the minority parties.
Meanwhile, Dr. Radhika Kumaraswamy, Sarvodaya leader Dr. A.T. Ariyarathna and former Appeal Court Judge A.W.A. Salaam have been named as civil society representatives to the proposed constitutional council.
