The Foreign Affairs Ministry says that Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Iran has rejected the request for certification of a permit for dispatching, from Iran to Colombo harbour, a stock of goods belonging to former Sri Lankan Ambassador in Russia Udayanga Weeragunga who was reported missing, and for handing over the said stock of goods to a different person.
Participating at a media briefing held yesterday Foreign Affairs Media spokesperson Maheeshanee Kolonney said that the former ambassador had visited the Sri Lankan Embassy in Teheran, and made this request and that the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Iran had informed that such a certification could not be given.
Currently charges have been levelled against Udayanga Weeratunga with regard to supplying weapons to Ukraine rebels.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry had earlier revealed that while the former ambassador had also been accused of engaging in various business dealings using the ambassadorial privileges, by now he had gone missing.
