SLmigrants in Indonesia seek asylum in New Zealand

It was reported that 65 persons including 54 Sri Lankans who were arrested in Indonesia while illegally migrating via sea, have sought asylum in New Zealand.

A New Zealand radio channel reported that the migrants have submitted a letter requesting for asylum in their country.

The letter has been signed by all 65 migrants including the Sri Lankans who are detained in Kupang Detention Centre.

They have further stated in the letter that they cannot return to their countries of origin and that they are experiencing great tension at the Indonesian detention centre. 

The group of migrants were arrested by the coastal guards en route to New Zealand while their vessel was subjected to an accident.

Apart from the Sri Lankans, there were 10 Bangladesh nationals and 1 Myanmar national among the migrants.
