He stated this while speaking during a meeting held in Badulla today.
He also said that he and Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva who also represent the same District have become good friends nowadays.
He further said that personally they would prefer the preferential voting system, as they can claim the number 1 and 2 spots in the list, based on the total preferential votes.
However, considering what’s best for the country, they would opt for the new electoral system which would appoint one representative per electoral seat.
Meanwhile, speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo today, former Minister G.L Peiris said that people have expectations of removing the preferential voting system and passing the 20th amendment.
He added that, it is a minority government which is attempting to pass the 20th amendment and that it would be a futile effort.
A problematic situation remains regarding the number of MP seats based on the new electoral system.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that further discussions are necessary regarding the matter.
Nevertheless, UNP has given their consent for the electoral system which appoints 230 MPs to parliament.
