Cabinet approval was given, not to the electoral system that was discussed: says JVP Amendments are allowed inside parliament: a statement from SLFP
The JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the Cabinet has approved not the 20th Amendment that had been discussed in the past.
MP Dissanayake expressed these views when our news team asked him to comment on the 20th Amendment that was passed by the Cabinet yesterday.
Meanwhile State Minister of Cultural and Arts Nandimitra Ekanayake told our news team the Cabinet has approved the 20th Amendment with provisions to make amendments within parliament.
The Cabinet approved yesterday the new electoral system which proposes 225 parliament seats.
It was presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Under this new electoral system, 125 MPs are elected through first past the post system while 75 seats through equal representation system.
25 MPs would be proposed through the national list.
However the JVP said that what was discussed so far is the electoral system proposed by Maithreepala Sirisena which consists of 255 parliament seats.
Deputy Leader of Tamil Progressive Alliance and Education Deputy Minister V. Radhakrishnan said that the new electoral system approved by the Cabinet yesterday is unfair for minority parties as well as minority communities.
When our news team contacted TNA leader R. Sampandan to express his views on the new electoral system, he declined to comment, saying he did not receive the copies of the new constitutional Draft Bill as yet.
However, a meeting of the UPFA parliamentarians is held at the president’s office at this moment.
