It has been decided to reach an accord among political party leaders about the future action of the Constitutional Council.

The political party leaders’ meeting presided by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa would take future action in parliament as per this accord.

Former Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne, who represented the political party meeting on behalf of the SLFP, stated that today’s meeting decided not to accommodate government ministers in the Constitutional Council hereafter.

Parliament met on June 3rd to endorse the proposed names of civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council.

However, parliament was adjourned without a decision after the Opposition argued that the names were proposed neither with a prior discussion nor sending acknowledgement to the proposed members.

Names of retired Judge A.W.A. Salaam, Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy and Dr. A.T. Ariyarathna had been proposed as civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council.

The political party leaders met twice on that day but failed to come to an agreement, and the political party leaders met today as well.
