AG appeals to overrule high court judgment and recall Kotakethana double murder case
The Attorney General filed a petition before the Appeal Court today requesting to overrule the recent verdict by the High Court that acquitted the three suspects of the double murder of a mother and her daughter of Kotaketana in Kahawatta.
The Attorney General stated in his petition that the High Court Judge has given her verdict without giving due consideration to the facts that were produced by the plaintiff’s faction.
The double murder of 63-year old Liyanarachchige Premawathie and her 23-year old daughter, Hewagamage Pushpakuari, and burning of their bodies inside their home was reported on July 19th, 2012.
Later, the Attorney General indicted Namal Chaminda Silva, Sisira Priyantha Kumara and Lokugamhewage Mithila in connection with the murder of the two.
However, Colombo High Court Judge Devika Livera de Tennakoon acquitted the three suspects from all charges on May 28th, as she found the evidence given in connection with the case failed to prove the charges.
Meanwhile, the 18-year old teen of Kotaketana who murdered his mother recently has been remanded until 18th of this month.
