Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will not be given Prime Ministerial candidacy

The Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senarathna quoted President Maithripala Sirisena as saying that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would be offered neither the UPFA Prime Ministerial candidacy not the post of MP in the National List.

He stated that the President informed yesterday, this message to the 6 member committee which was appointed to promote good faith between the two presidents.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has approved to reconsider the recommencement of Colombo Port City Project after a comprehensive environmental impact study report.  The proposal with regard to this project has been presented to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He has also presented another proposal with regard to the 20th Constitutional Amendment.

In his proposal, the premier has stated that the new electoral system would be implemented after the forthcoming general election.  The second proposal has also been approved by the Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake has presented to the cabinet a report of the loans that were obtained by the government during the first quarter of this year.

Accordingly, the government has obtained over Rs. 684 billion during the first 4 months.  Rs. 526 billion was obtained through local resources while the balance has been obtained via overseas means.  However, the ceiling of the loans approved by the government for this year is Rs. 1780 billion.   

At the same time, Cabinet has approved to pay Rs. 2000 monthly allowance for the elders of low income group families.

The Cabinet Spokesman said that the cabinet approved to setup a code of etiquette for the local government members.

Besides, the Cabinet approved the proposal to issue a special War Heroes card for the families of tri forces, police and the Civil Defence Force those who lost their lives or became disabled in action.  This proposal has been presented to the Cabinet by President Maithripala Sirisena.

The members of the war heroes’ families would be able to obtain hassle free services from 50 institutions by submitting this special war hero’s card.
