A person was killed when police opened fire on a lorry as it attempted to speed away disregarding police orders at a check point of Maha Oya at Aranthalawa in Ampara early this morning.

Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera stated that the officers on duty at the Mangalagama police had received a tip-off regarding illegal transport of cattle in a lorry.

Police had ordered a speeding lorry to stop at this moment, and the lorry had sped away disregarding police orders.

Later, the officers have informed the incident to the Aranthalawa check point immediately.

Police have ordered the oncoming lorry to stop but it had attempted to speed away through Aranthalawa check point as well despite police orders.

A person who traveled in the rear of the lorry died of the shooting, and Police Media Spokesman stated that the other suspects had fled the scene after abandoning the lorry on a by road at Borapana neighborhood.
