The negotiations that began for the third time between the estate owners and the Trade Unions with regard to workers’ salary increase have ended without a solution.
Lanka Kamkaru Jathika Sangamaya Secretary and Nuwara Eliya District MP P Rajathurai told our news team that a Sathyagraha would be launched if a daily pay for an estate worker is not increased upto 1000 rupees.
Estate Owners Association President Lalith Obeysekera and his board of directors, Ceylon Workers Congress Secretary and MP Arumugam Thondaman, Lanka Kamkaru Jathika Sangamaya General Secretary and State Minister S. Velayudan and members of several trade unions participated in the negations that concluded yesterday.
Negotiations on the same matter failed on two previous occasions as estate owners did not agree to pay the salary demanded by trade unions.
The current salary of an estate worker is 485 rupees per day.
During the negotiations, the estate owners have consented to pay 550 rupees to a worker per day for three days a week.
Trade Unions stated that estate owners have demanded that each worker should pluck at least 15 kilograms of tea leaves to pay 550 rupees.
This demand has been turned down by trade unions.
