Pavement hawkers allowed to engage in sales
At a discussion held yesterday with the President at the chair it was decided to permit Colombo city pavement vendors to engage in sales only in view of the Ramazan festival period.
Colombo Municipal Council Mayor A. J. M. Musammil said that at the discussion it was proposed to appoint a committee comprising representatives of several sections for studying the subject further.
The Urban Development Authority, the police, the CMC, vendors and several other sectors are members of this committee.
Pavements have been constructed for the security of the large number of people who travel daily in the Colombo city.
Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had taken action to evict from pavements the pavement vendors who were an obstruction to the public.
While alternative locations were constructed for some of the pavement vendors, the Defence Ministry had ordered the police to arrest those who engaged in selling in pavements.
As a result of this decision the Colombo pavements became available for the public to travel freely.
However vendors have begun their business in pavements again.
However Western Provincial council chief Minister expressed his objection to the decision taken by the Colombo Municipal council.
