Soldier attached to Army sniper unit sentenced to death in connection with Murusuvil murder: 4 others acquitted
A soldier attached to the army sniper unit was given death penalty by the Colombo High Court after he was found guilty of murdering 8 civilians at Mirusuwil in Jaffna.
The panel of 3 High Court Judges which heard the case acquitted 4 other soldiers attached to the same unit.
The 5 soldiers were charged for abducting and killing of the 8 civilians on December 19th and 20th of 2000.
The bodies of the victims were found from a mass grave, and the incident became an internationally controversial issue later.
It was stated that a group of displaced civilians were abducted by a certain group of soldiers when the civilians returned from Uduppili to visit their property at Mirusuwil.
The case was heard by three high court judges.
However the verdict was announced today by Justice Prithi Surasena and Justice Lalith Jayasuriya as the third Judge had retired from service.
