Parliament dissolved: Nominations to be called from 6th to 13th July: Election on August 17th: New Parliament by 01st September

Parliament was dissolved with effect from last midnight.

The gazette notification signed by President Maithripala Sirisena dissolving parliament was sent to the Government Press.

Accordingly the general election will be held on the 17th of August, while nominations will be accepted from the 6th to the 13th of July.

The new Parliament is to convene for the first time on the 01st of September.

The previous general election was held in the year 2010 where the UPFA won 144 seats whereas the UNP managed only 60, Illangei Thamil Arasu Katchchi 14 and Democratic National Alliance 7.

Parliament dissolved

Government sources stated that Parliament will be dissolved with effect from midnight.

The gazette notification signed by President Maithripala Sirisena dissolving parliament has been sent to the State Printers.

The President earlier in the day hinted that the prevailing political situation would lead to dissolving parliament without passing the 20th Amendment.
