Update : Mahinda faction awaits for Maithree faction decision

It is reported that the Maithripala faction would announce definitely today whether former president Mahinda Rajapaksa is given SLFP nominations.

A Mahinda faction member stated it was revealed yesterday that a decision with regard to this matter will be given this morning.

President Maithripala Sirisena has told during the meeting with UPFA coalition leaders yesterday, neither the SLFP prime ministerial candidacy nor party group leadership can be given to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The president has further said that even SLFP nominations cannot be given to Mahinda under the prevailing circumstances.

However, it is reported that a final decision was scheduled to be announced this morning after further considering the matter.

Awaiting the President’s announcement on this matter, Mahinda Rajapaksa faction was compelled to cancel the media conference they had convened at Narahenpita Abhayaramaya this morning.

Meantime, a SLFP senior member rejected the media reports that said SLFP leaders are meeting this morning.

However, certain political sources stated that leaders of SLFP, UPFA and Mahinda Faction are having discussions at different level.

However, former minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, who expressed his views to our news team a while ago, stated that the hopes of prime ministerial candidacy, UPFA leadership or nominations have shattered.

How should former President Mahinda contest the General Election: President to inform officially today.

President Maithripala Sirisena decided not to give prime ministerial candidacy or group leadership to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

Reports say that this decision was taken at the discussion UPFA leaders had with the President last afternoon.

Former MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara who participated in the discussion said that the President had also decided not to give the UPFA election campaign leadership to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However President Maitripala Sirisena discussed about this further with a group of senior SLFP leaders last night.

Political sources said that the President had decided to meet the UPFA leaders at the Presidential Secretariat at 10 a.m. today and officially inform them his decision.

Reports say that in addition an SLFP executive committee meeting also has been convened to be held this morning.

Meanwhile representatives of parties and organizations of the faction that say that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa should be given prime ministerial candidacy held another discussion last night.

While this discussion was held at the former president’s residence in Colombo, a group of persons including former MPs G. L. Peiris, Dinesh Gunawardena, Bandula Gunawardane, Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, T. B. Ekanayake, Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and  Y. G. Padmasiri, former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Udaya Gammanpila, and Venerable Somananda Thero participated in the discussion.
