Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked the Election Commissioner whether he should make any payment to the Government for his use of the bullet-proof vehicle during election time.

In response to our query with regard to this election commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that it was a praiseworthy proposal.

While a discussion was held with regard to this yesterday, after the discussion the election commissioner has decided to inform the finance ministry and the auditor general to decide upon a fee for using the relevant bullet-proof vehicle.

Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who represented the UNP at the discussion held yesterday between the election commissioner and party secretaries proposed that it was appropriate that a fee was levied for government vehicles ministers used during election time.

Accordingly it was decided to levy a due fee for such use.

Similarly it was decided to reduce the number of police personnel deployed for the security of former MPs as well as other Ministers with regard to whom the Intelligence Division has not reported the existence of a threat.

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told our news team further that since the general election and the A/L examination coincide a large number of police personnel were required for these duties.
