Will the SLFP quit the Alliance
It is reported that SLFP has been receiving proposals from various factions to quit the UPFA and contest the upcoming general election on its own or form a new alliance with favorable factions.
Political sources stated that several proposals have been made to the President.
The Left Center, which quit Samasamaja and Communist parties during the Presidential election to support President Maithreepala Sirisena, has made this request from the president.
The North central Provincial council chief minister Peshala Jayarathna said that the president would make an announcement in the near future about his decision to give UPFA nominations to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He stated this in response to our query as to why President Maithreepala Sirisena does not respond to the questions raised by civil society organizations.
UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha, in a communiqué issued recently stated that a decision was taken to give nominations to former President Rajapaksa during a party leaders’ meeting presided by president Maithreepala Sirisena.
However, North Central Provincial Chief Minister Peshala Jayarathna said that merely because the statement was issued by its General Secretary Susil Premajayantha, it doesn’t mean it was issued by the main partner of the alliance, the SLFP.
