A group of CWC members including its general secretary Arumugam Thondaman launched a satyagraha in the middle of the Hatton town yesterday demanding that the daily wage of estate workers be increased up to Rs. 1000.

While with the failure of discussions held with Estate Employers’ association on several occasions asking for the increase of daily wage of labourers’ up to Rs. 1000, the tea estate labourers had begun a trade union action of slow work, it is now three days for this trade union action.

As a result of this trade union action of slow work, 23 estate companies have decided to close down tea factories temporarily and remove the staff.

A group of CWC members including its general secretary Arumugam Thondaman launched a satyagraha in the middle of the Hatton town yesterday in protest against this.

However Lanka National Estate Workers’s Union general secretary K. Velayudan said that this trade union action was being taken for political advantage.
