Letter to IGP from Election Commissioner regarding Prasanna Ranatunga

Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has requested the IGP to postpone recording a statement from Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga until July 14th.

The Election Commissioner has written to the IGP after considering the facts based on a letter addressed to him by UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha.

Premajayantha, in his request to the Election Commissioner stated that Ranatunga is busy preparing nominations for the Gampaha district, in his capacity as the district leader.

And requested the Election Commissioner to intervene and seek IGP’s assistance to postpone the summons on Western Provincial council Chief Minister Ranatunga.

The Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has been summoned to the FCID at 9 this morning.

However, he did not turn out at the FCID today.

The FCID has received a complaint against Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga for misappropriating Rs. 5 million with regard to a land transaction.

Earlier, FCID questioned Chief Minister’s wife Morin Ranatunga for over 7 hours on July 2nd in connection with the same alleged land scam.

Meanwhile, Prasanna Ranatunga filed a fundamental rights case requesting the Supreme Court to prevent FCID from arresting him.
