Update: Lets empower the Public after the General Election; PM Ranil Wickramasingha states while signing the agreement of United National Front for Good Governance

An MOU to establish the United National Front for Good Governance was signed today by the UNP, JHU, breakaway faction of the SLFP, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Tamil Progressive Alliance.

Several party seniors including UNP Leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim participated at the occasion.

SLFP Ministers including Rajitha Senaratne, Arjuna Ranatunga, MKDS Gunawardena and Earl Gunasekara as well as JHU Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera participated at the event.

Accordingly all political parties looking forward to contest under the United National Front have agreed on 12 points.

Chairperson of the United National Front for Good Governance will be Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera while Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka would be the General Secretary.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the event stated that the intention is to create a governing system that empowers the public.

The MOU to establish the United National Front for Good Governance will be signed at Temple Trees today.


It is reported that several factions representing a group of former MP’s who defected from the UPFA are expected to sign the MOU.

SLFP Ministers including Arjuna Ranatunga, Rajitha Senaratne, MKDS Gunawardena as well as JHU Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka in addition to Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera are also reported to contest under the United National Front ticket.

Minister Lakshman Kiriella stated that they could complete the UNP nominations lists by this evening.

He said that many more MP’s of the UPFA were likely to join forces with the UNP.

The MOU to establish the United National Front for Good Governance will be signed at Temple Trees tomorrow.

It is reported that several factions representing a group of former MPS who defected from the UPFA are expected to sign the MOU.

SLFP Ministers including Arjuna Ranatunga, Rajitha Senaratne, M.K.D.S. Gunawardana as well as JHU Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka in addition to Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thera are also reported to contest under the United National Front ticket.

Minister MKDS Gunawardena stated that 13 SLFP Mps have agreed to contest from UNP elephant symbol.

It was also reported that Minister S.B. Disanayake also would defect from the UPFA and contest the election under the United National Front ticket. He stated this while addressing the media in Kandy.

Meanwhile, Minister Lakshman Kiriella told our news team that another group of SLFP MPs also intends to join the UNP

Speaking during a media briefing held in Panadura this evening, Minister Reginold Cooray stated that he would not contest the forthcoming General Election as he does not have sufficient funds to contest under the prevailing electoral system.
