At least 27 people, mostly women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede on the banks of the River Godavari in Andhra Pradesh on the first day of a major religious festival.

As many as 25 of those who died, were women.

The tragedy occurred at the same steps leading to the river where Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu took a dip early this morning in the Rajamundhry district.

Pilgrims reportedly rushed towards one of the gates that allows access to the river banks and a group of women slipped, causing the stampede.
