The inspection of cosmetics and perfumes imported to the country has been hindered as the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority was annulled after the new Pharmaceuticals Act was passed recently.

A new National Drugs Regulatory Authority has been introduced under the new Act, and this authority has not been vested with power to inspect devices or cosmetics imported to the country.

Earlier, the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority launched instant raids to inspect cosmetics and perfumes specially used at beauty parlors.

Such products were allowed to enter the country on permits issued by the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority in the past.

Chairman of the National Drugs Regulatory Authority Dr. Lal Jayasinghe said that his institution has not been vested with necessary legal provisions to inspect or issue import permits to cosmetics or perfumes.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Sri Lanka Dermatologists Association Dr. Janaka Akarawita said that patients infected with skin diseases will face a risk due to the prevailing situation.
