A UPFA Gampaha District candidate who is an Island reconvicted criminal describes his position
Public Security and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga disclosed today that an Island Reconvicted Criminal has been included to the UPFA Gampaha district candidate list.
Addressing a media briefing held at UNP Headquarters Sirikotha today, Minister John Amaratunga expressed his charges against SLFP Kelaniya electorate organizer Tilak Waragoda.
He stated that he has taken legal advice to present facts to a High Court or a Supreme court and obtain a Writ order, and thereby they expect the relevant candidate list will be cancelled.
Our news team contacted Kelaniya organizer Tilak Waragoda to comment on the charges against him.
He stated that if there’s an allegation as such, then he should seek legal measures instead of mudslinging, adding that he’s busy with election campaigns and he has no time to be involved in other issues.
However, minister Amaratunga, in a leaflet distributed among journalists yesterday stated that Waragoda has been given a suspended jail term after he was found guilty for attempting to prepare forge documents and cheating Rs. 750,000 through cheques.
The leaflet also stated that Tilak Waragoda has been entered to the Island Reconvicted Criminals name list in 2008 under the police head quarters number 919.
Later, Tilak Waragoda’s name has been removed from the IRC list in 2012, after the court order against him was dismissed by an appeal.
However, his name was re-entered to the IRC list under police number 895 on breach of agreement charges in November last year.
President Maithripala Sirisena appointed Tilak Waragoda as the Kelaniya organizer recently after former minister Mervin Silva resigned from the post on July 16th.
