Buddhist nuns without national identity card can vote using temporary identity cards
According to the Election Secretariat, Buddhist nuns who do not possess national identity cards can still cast their votes by obtaining a temporary identity card.
While speaking to our news team, Additional Election Commissioner M.M. Mohammed stated this in response to the allegation of identity cards not being issued to Buddhist nuns.
Chief Prelate Siyam Chapter’s Rangiri- Dambulu sect most venerable Inaa-maluwe Sumangala Thera stated that currently there are 1300 Buddhist nuns in the country.
However, the Chief Prelate also stated that since 2004 the Buddhist nuns have not been issued with national identity cards.
When our news team enquired from Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs Chandra-prema Gamage, he told us to enquire the matter from the Ministry of Buddha Sasana.
