2 Candidates arrested for allegedly obstructing the duty of Assistant Election Commissioner at Kaththankudi
Two candidates who are contesting the forthcoming general election from Batticaloa district have been arrested this morning in connection with disrupting an assistant election commissioner’s duty at Kaththankudi.
Among them are the former chairman of Kaththankudi Urban Council Shaul Hameed and a former Eastern Provincial Councilor Kalanthar Lebbe Muhammadu Fareed.
The Batticaloa district assistant election commissioner has received information that a deputy minister of the previous government and UPFA candidate contesting the forthcoming general election is distributing parcels of goods among the participants of a convention.
Later, the assistant election commissioner accompanied the Kaththankudi police to visit the venue last Tuesday.
The two candidates were charged for attempting to disrupt the duty of the assistant election commissioner and attempted assault at that moment.
Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the two candidates were arrested for the two alleged charges and the illegal election canvassing.
