Notices issued on 29 Sabaragamuwa PC councillors of pro-government and opposition to appear before court
The Ratnapura Magistrate Court has issued notice on 29 members of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council to appear before the Court on August 12th with regard to not handing over the state vehicles so far.
The Court issued notices today after Ratnapura Police explained the Court regarding the matter.
Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Secretary Lalith Dodagamuwa informed all the councilors in writing that they should return their official vehicles in order to prevent PC councilors from misusing state vehicles for election campaigns.
Later, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial council Secretary complained to the police that 29 members have not returned their vehicles so far.
A senior officer of the Ratnapura police stated that, notices were issued to 29 councilors after the matter was reported to the court.
Among them, 13 Provincial councilors represent the Ratnapura District while 16 represent the Kegalle district.
In addition, there are several candidates contesting the General election representing the ruling party as well as the opposition among them.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya stated that he is constantly receiving complaints that state vehicles are misused for election campaigns.
Earlier, the Secretary to the President had issued a Circular asking all MPs except ministers, state ministers, deputy ministers, speaker and the Opposition leader to return their official vehicles.
At the same time, the vehicles used by private staff of all ministers should also be returned as per the Circular.
The Election Commissioner reiterated that legal action will be taken against the wrong-doers under the misappropriation of state property.
Accordingly, the election commissioner has informed all ministry secretaries and chief secretaries of provincial councils to provide him with details of vehicles which have not been returned so far.
He further said that a list of non-returned vehicles would be published in the newspapers once he receives the complete details.
