512 arrested for violating election laws; 2 murders and 36 assault cases reported

The police Media Spokesman office stated that 512 persons have been arrested in connection with election related complaints.

The police election office has so far received 176 complaints with regard to violation of election law, and 404 persons have been arrested following these complaints.

In addition 205 another election related complaints have been received and 108 persons have been arrested.

Several elections related incidents were reported from different areas of the country.

A heated argument was taken place between UPFA Gampaha district candidate Sarath Kumara Gunarathne and police when steps were taken to remove campaign propaganda displayed in front of Negombo Urban Council this morning.

Meanwhile a group of persons have assaulted three supporters of Matara District UNP candidate Sagala Rathnayake at Kotapola Galdola in Deniyaya yesterday afternoon.

Two victims who received injuries in the assault were admitted to Deniyaya District hospital.

7 suspects have been arrested in connection with the assault incident, and a group of UPFA supporters led by Provincial Councilors have staged a protest in front of Deniyaya police station demanding the release of their companions.

At the same time, UPFA Moneragala District candidate Sumeda J Jayasena’s party office at Magandalamulla has also been burnt by an unknown group yesterday.
