Indian fishermen who have been detained in Sri Lanka since June for violating maritime regulations have been released by the courts yesterday.

While 14 of the fishermen belonged to Rameswaram, the rest were from Nagapattinam and Karaikal.

All the 40 fishermen have been released by the respective Judicial Magistrates.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa urged the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to get the Tamil Nadu fishermen and their boats released from the Sri Lankan custody.

All Indian fishermen have now been released from Sri Lankan custody.

Their release also came just days before India is expected to commemorate its 69th Independence Day on August 15th.
