People demand Mahinda as their future PM: Former Speaker Chamal #GenElecSL
Former speaker Chamal Rajapaksa says that the people demand former president Mahinda Rajapaksa as their future Prime Minister.
Addressing a media conference held in Tissamaharamaya today, former speaker Rajapaksa said that he bows to the people’s mandate.
In a letter to the former president Rajapaksa, President Maithripala Sirisena stated that one of the senior SLFPers, other than former president Rajapaksa would be appointed the prime minister in the event the UPFA is able to form a government after the August 17th general election.
In the president’s letter to the former president, the name of Chamal Rajapaksa was also proposed as a qualified senior SLFPer to the premiership.
Expressing his views over the president’s letter, former speaker Rajapaksa said that all party members should unanimously declare that Mahinda Rajapaksa should be the prime ministerial candidate of the party.
He also said that the people do not demand to appoint him as the prime minister.
Meanwhile, Alliance lawyers Association has sent a letter to the Election Commissioner with regard to the president’s letter which was sent to the former president yesterday.
The lawyers association requests the election commissioner to inform President Maithreepala Sirisena to make a statement asking the people to ignore the content of his letter sent to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.
