Meanwhile, the relevant district secretaries stated that the voter turnout in most districts exceeded 60% by 3PM.  

65% cast their votes in Nuwara Eliya District by 3PM.

Accordingly, it was reported that the voter turnout in Kandy District was at 68%, whereas 62% voted for Matale District, 65% voted for Kegalle District and 65% voted for Anuradhapura District.

In addition, 62% voted for Matara District, 61% for Galle District, 63% for Badulla District and 65% voted for Ratnapura district.

It was also reported that the voter turnout in Gampaha District was between 65% to 68%.

Overall voter turnout exceed 55% by 2PM

According to District Secretary N.A.A. Pushpakumara, the voter turnout in Trincomalee District was at 65% by 2 this evening.

Accordingly, voter turnout for Gampaha District was at 58% and Vanni district was at 60%.

About 58% have voted in Kegalle district by 2 PM, while 60%have voted in Digamadulla district.

In addition, 55% have voted in Galle District and 44% have voted in Jaffna District.

District Secretary Gamini Ilangaratne told our news team that the voter turnout in Kurunegala District was 55% by 2PM.

Voter turnout in Kandy 58%, Matale 55% by 12 noon

District Secretary H.M.P. Hitisekara stated that voter turnout in Kandy District was at 58% by 12 noon.

According to District Secretary Neil de Alwis, the voter turnout in Matale district was at 55 %.

In addition, the district secretaries stated that the voter turn out in Ratnapura district was between 40% to 45%, while the voter turnout in Moneragala district was at 40%.

About 50% have voted in Vanni and Matara districts.

Moreover, District Secretary Ravindra Hewavitharana stated that about 45% have voted in Galle District.

Voter turnout in the morning at a higher percentage

The District Returning officers state that the voters were keen on casting their vote for the General Election this morning.

40% voted in Matale District by noon while the voter turnout in Vavuniya district was at 35%.

30% of voters in Gampaha district cast their votes during the first few hours in the morning, while the voter turnout for Kurunegala district was at 30% and Anuradhapura district was between 20% to 30%.

In addition, the district returning officers stated that the voter turnout in Galle and Badulla district during the first 3 hours in the morning remained at 15 %.

Voting for electing peoples representatives for the 8th parliament begins

Over 15 million voters will exercise their franchise today at the General Elections 2015 to elect 225 members to the 8th Parliament of Sri Lanka.

A total of 15 million 44 thousand 490 registered voters in 22 electoral districts are eligible to cast their ballots today, in the country’s 15th General Election since 1947.

A total of 6,151 candidates are in the fray from 501 political parties and Independent groups.

Out of the 225 representatives in Parliament, 196 members are elected from the electoral districts while the remaining 29 members are appointed from the National List.
