Additional Election Commissioner R.M.A.L. Rathnayake stated that counting of votes with regard to 2015 General Election commenced at 4.30 this evening.

He further stated that transporting of ballot boxes from the polling centres to the respective counting centres have commenced by now.

The Additional Commissioner also stated that heavy showers have not obstructed the proceedings of the election duties.

Meanwhile, the District Secretaries of Galle, Nuwara Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts stated that the voter turnout for their districts were at 70% when the voting concluded at 4 PM.

Voting for 2015 General Election which commenced at 7 this morning at 12,314 polling centres, concluded at 4 PM.

General Election peaceful; great enthusiasm in the North

The General Election to elect members for the 8th parliament began at 7 this morning at 12,314 polling centers throughout the island.

District Secretaries told our news team that the election is peaceful so far.



Colombo District Secretary Kamal Padmasiri said that the voting is continuing smoothly.



Kalutara District Secretary U.D.C. Jayalal stated that voters are showing much enthusiasm to cast their votes.

Meanwhile, Gampaha District Secretary Sunil Jayalath stated that the election is proceeding successfully in 1054 polling centres and that no major incidents have been reported so far. He also stated that about 30% have cast their votes by noon.

Anuradhapura District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri told our news team that 25% to 30% of voters have cast their votes in the 660 polling centres of the district until this noon.

Galle District Secretary Ravindra Hevavitharana said 15% of voters have cast their votes in 703 polling centres of the district, despite the delay in voter turnout experienced in the morning.



Kurunegala District Secretary Gamini Ilangarathna said 30% of voters have cast their vote so far.



Ampara District Secretary Thusitha P. Wanasinghe said voting is peaceful in the district so far.

Trincomalee District Secretary N.A.A. Pushpakumara said that the voter turnout rapidly increased after 10 this morning.

Kilinochchi District Secretary Sundaram Arumenayagam said the voter turnout was at 40% by 10 this morning.

Vavuniya District Secretary Bandula Harischandra said the voter turnout was around 35% during the first couple of hours since the voting commenced.

Additional Election Commissioner who is currently visiting Jaffna said that the voters of the North are showing much enthusiasm to cast their votes.

He also stated that the election is proceeding peacefully in all polling centres, however, the voter turnout in certain polling centres remained low until noon.
