Ban ki moon congratulates the President for holding a peaceful election: Laurels from UK as well to Prime Minister
UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon Congratulated President Maitripala Sirisena for being able to hold a peaceful and a successful election.
The Presidential Media Division said that UN General Secretary congratulated the President last afternoon over the phone.
He commended President Maithripala Sirisena for having "shepherded an inclusive process" and the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya for his exemplary efforts in helping guarantee the exercise of the right to vote of the people of Sri Lanka.
The Secretary General said he looks forward to continuing to work with the President, the Prime Minister, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka in support of building long-term peace and prosperity for the country.
Responding to the congratulations President Maitripala Sirisena informed the Secretary General that holding the election in such manner was evidence testifying that democracy reining in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond congratulating Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said The United Kingdom will remain a steadfast partner for Sri Lanka as it continues on the path towards delivering reconciliation and a lasting peace across the country.
He said the "manner in which the election was run was a credit to the Sri Lankan people."
The United States applauded the Sri Lankan Elections Commissioner, Sri Lankan civil society, and the candidates themselves for holding free and fair elections that were widely hailed as among the most peaceful in Sri Lanka’s history.
