Update : Ranil Wickramasingha sworn in as Prime Minister


UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the 23rd Prime Minister of Sri Lanka before President Maithripala Sirisena at a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat.

Seniors of the UNP, parliamentarians as well as Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa were also present at the occasion.

Premier Wickremesinghe was first appointed as the Prime Minister from 1993 to 1994.

He was also elected as the Prime Minister from 2001 to 2004 when the United National Front Government won the parliamentary elections in 2001.

Wickremesinghe was appointed as Prime Minister for the third time by President Sirisena after winning the 2015 Presidential Election.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Ranil Wickremesinghe after he was sworn-in as Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister.

After Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Party won the Parliamentary polls, the Indian Prime Minister had called him up on August 18th to congratulate him and expressed confidence that the relations between the two countries will get better under his leadership.

Meanwhile, Leaders of Singapore sent congratulatory letters to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as well.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a letter to his Sri Lankan counterpart stated that the electoral victory reflects the faith Sri Lankans have placed in your vision of a peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation.

Under the leadership of Ranil Wickramasingha, Sri Lanka has implemented wide-ranging reforms and enhanced healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The challenge is to change the political culture: Says UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who takes oaths as Prime Minister today

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that modern democracy is not one party rule over the country but working together by a number of parties as well as the civil society.  

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who takes oaths as the new Prime Minister today said further that the challenge now was to create a new political culture in the country.

Participating a religious programme held at the Naalandaaraama Buddhist Temple in Nugegoda yesterday, the UNP leader said that all political parties in parliament as well as the public should work concertedly for this.

Ranil Wickremesinghe will be sworn in as the Prime Minister of the new government tomorrow morning

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who won the recently concluded General Election will be sworn in as the 23rd Prime Minister of Sri Lanka tomorrow morning.

He will take oath in the new position before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has held the prime ministerial post on three previous occasions, in 1993, 2001 as well as 2015 following the Presidential election.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to participate in religious activities at Nugegoda Nalandaramaya this evening and at Hunupitiya Gangaramaya tomorrow morning, prior to assuming duty.
