Update: Crossovers between UNP and the SLFP barred

The General Secretaries of UNP and SLFP signed an MoU today, to not allow their elected members to switch parties within two years.

UNP General Secretary Kabeer Hashim and SLFP General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake signed the agreement just after UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the new prime minister before the President.

The MoU which signed this morning to assure a stable government concludes 10 factors including efforts for economic growth, restore freedom, eliminate corruption, upgrade education and health, foreign relations, rights of women and children and enrich culture and art.

The new commissions proposed in the 19th amendment would be established soon to ensure good governance.

A government mechanism of compromise would be created to enable parliamentarians of all political parties to contribute their share.

A new electoral system of the mixture of first past the post and proportional systems would be introduced by allocating a permanent parliament representative to each electorate.

However, further discussions would be held after reaching an agreement with the first 10 factors that included in the MoU signed today.

 SLFP and UNP sign an MOU for a government of compromise

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National Party to work together in the next Parliament.

The MoU was signed by UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim and SLFP Acting General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake.
