US State Department’s Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal arrived in the island this morning
She is due to meet the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Maithripala Sirisena.
Nisha Biswal’s Sri Lankan tour was planned several weeks ago, however, it was postponed due to the General Election of the country.
It is also significant that the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State is taking place close to the releasing date of the UN Human Rights Commission report on Sri Lanka.
UN Human Rights Commission passed a resolution with regard to Sri Lanka with the participation of countries led by the US.
The visit of US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal is considered as a prelude to US State Secretary John Kerry’s Sri Lankan tour.
The US Department of State commended Sri Lanka for holding the recently concluded General Election in a peaceful, free and fair manner.
