The body of the monk who committed suicide by jumping into the river Nilwala at the Bandaththara bridge, Matara was recovered this morning as it was washed ashore at the Matara-Hungamgoda port.

A robe suspected to have belonged to the monk had been found by a team of Naval divers yesterday afternoon from the bottom of the river.

The 80 year old monk had lived in the elderly monks’ monastery in Galle-Baddegama-Kibiela and had come to Matara-Nadugala area in which his house is situated.

Kamala Gamage, niece of the monk expressing her views to Hiru News, stated that the monk had said that he is jumping into the river for the fish to be benefited of his body.
