Elephant Calf Seized from Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa Wildlife officers arrested 2 mahouts after they brought an elephant calf with doubtful registration, to a procession held at a temple in Majuwana, Hikkaduwa last afternoon.

Director General of Wild life Department H.D. Ratnayake told our new team that the elephant calf taken into custody, as well as the 2 mahouts will be produced before Hikkaduwa Magistrate Court today.

The wild life officers stated that the documents provided with regard to the registration of the elephant as well as the age mentioned in the documents was suspicious.

In addition, the Veterinary surgeon who inspected the elephant calf stated that it was transported bound with chains causing torment to the animal.

Accordingly, the Vet Surgeon has stated that the elephant calf should not participate in the procession.

However, when questioned by the wildlife officers, the mahouts have said that the elephant calf also participated in the recently concluded Kandy Esala Perahera.

The Wildlife Officers stated that they are conducting an investigation with regard to the matter.
