The Speaker’s announcement was made when the House met at 9.30 this morning.
Speaker told the Parliament that R. Sampanthan is appointed as the Opposition Leader as there is no request made by the UPFA with regard to the post.
TNA members earlier claimed the Opposition Leader position for their party.
However, NFF leader Vimal Weerawansa lodged his objection for offering Opposition Leader position to TNA.
He underlined the letter sent to the President with 56 signatures of UPFA MPs requesting to appoint Kumara Welgama as the Opposition Leader.
Amid a heated argument in the house, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker and the leader of the house intervened.
Later, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that the process of selection of the Opposition Leader would be explained to the house on a later occasion.
