Premier Moves Resolution to Extend Ministerial Portfolios

Thursday, 03 September 2015 - 14:56

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe moved a resolution in Parliament today to obtain approval for the extended portfolios of the national government.

The resolution has sought approval for 48 cabinet ministers and 45 state and deputy ministerial posts.

However JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the current government cannot be accepted as national government therefore cabinet portfolios should not exceed 30.

He further said that it is not a national government because all political parties have no representation in it.

Later the Prime Minister quoted certain sections of the 19th Amendment and attempted to justify his resolution is constitutional.

At that point, SLFP Senior Vice Chairman and former Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva submitted facts in support of the Premier’s resolution.

MPs Dinesh Gunawardana, Wasudeva Nanayakkara and Wimal Weerawansa spoke against the resolution and at that point Speaker adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

As the house reassembled the Speaker stated that the Prime Minister's resolution is constitutional.
