A debate is currently in progress in Parliament to obtain approval for cabinet portfolios and other ministry positions of the new national government.
Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake said that the resolution presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe includes 48 cabinet portfolios and 45 State and Deputy Ministerial posts.
Accordingly, there would be 93 ministerial posts in the new government.
However commencing the debate, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake argued that cabinet should not exceed 30, since what will be formed is not a national government.
In response, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said that the resolution presented by him to Parliament is in accordance with the constitution.
