Protest in Tamil Nadu against the arrest of Indian Fishermen
Tamil Nadu fishermen have staged a strike against the arrest of Indian fishermen who breached the local maritime border.
Indian media sources stated that due to the strike, Rameswaram fishermen will abstain from setting sail from the main fishing harbour in Tamil Nadu.
Sri Lankan Navy arrested 16 Indian fishermen for poaching 3 days ago.
The strike was launched after 11 fishermen associations of Tamil Nadu held a discussion yesterday with regard to the matter.
Tamil Nadu fishermen associations stated that their fishermen have been engaged in fishing along Palk Strait for several centuries.
However, they also state that Sri Lanka has seized 30 fishing vessels after imposing the new fishing season since last June.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jayaram has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi in writing to intervene and release the fishing vessels.
However, the Indian fishermen who were arrested due to poaching as well as their vessels have been released on several occasions in the recent past.
