Western Provincial Councilor Gamini Thilakasiri quoted the President as saying that it is possible to announce the name of the new Western Provincial Council Chief Minster before the council session begins tomorrow.

Thilakasiri stated this to our news team following a discussion which was held under the patronage of the President in his office, with regard to the now vacant Western Provincial Chief Minster position today.

UPFA Western Provincial Councilors participated in this meeting.

55 seats of Provincial Council are now vacant as several PC members have been elected to parliament in the last general election.

The highest number of member seats is vacated in the Western Provincial Council as 14 PC members have entered parliament.

Among them are 6 UPFA seats including the Chief Ministerial post.

Meanwhile, another discussion to decide on the Chief Ministerial post of the North Western Provincial Council began at the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon.

A Presidential Secretariat spokesman stated that North Western Provincial Council UPFA members are participating in the discussion held under the patronage of the President this evening.

Meeting Between Western and North Western UPFA Ministers and President


The UPFA ministers of Western and North Western provincial councils are due to meet President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon. Special attention will be paid to the two vacant chief ministerial portfolios of the two provincial councils.

The UPFA ministers of the Western province will be meeting the President at 3.00pm. As Prasanna Ranatungathe former chief provincial minister was elected to the Parliament at the General Election his seat was vacated. However it is reported that six ministers are qualified for the post of chief provincial minister. Provincial minister Gamini Thilakasiri ranks top among them. In addition to that, Chairman of Western Provincial Council Sunil Wijeratne, provincial ministers Ranjith Somawansa, Upali Kodikara, Hector Bethmage and Isuru Devapriya said to be are qualified for the post.  

Meanwhile the UPFA ministers representing the North Western Provincial Council will be meeting the President at 4.00pm today. The chief minister’s post was vacated as Dayasiri Jayasekara was elected to the Parliament.

However a few nominations have been put forward for the post of Chief Minister of the North Western Provincial Council as well and Chairman of North Western Provincial Council Dharmasiri Dasanayake heads the list.

In addition to this provincial ministers D B Herath, Gunadasa Dehigama and Sandhya Rajapakse too are qualified for the post.
