JVP MP Vijitha Herath has been appointed to the Constitutional Council to represent one of the members to be appointed in agreement with the prime minister and the opposition leader.
However Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa has already been appointed as the Prime Minister’s representative.
However, the president has to endorse these appointments.
The Constitutional Council convened for the first time yesterday at the parliamentary complex after the new parliament convened.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader, R. Sambanthan, as well as Ministers Wijedasa Rajapaksa, Patali Champika Ranawaka and W.D.J. Seneviratne participated in the meeting of the constitutional council, which was held under the patronage of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
Meanwhile, Doctor A.T. Ariya-ratne, Doctor Raadhika Kumara-swami and President’s Counsel Shibly Azeez have been nominated as civil members of the Constitutional Council.
The Constitutional Council which convened yesterday has proposed to present the names of the civil representatives for parliamentary approval to the next parliament session which will be held on 22nd of September.
