Prison Commissioner  General Rohana Pushpakumara states that an immediate investigation will be made into the incident regarding the special treatment provided by prison officials to the international drug kingpin Mohamad Siddeek while the suspect was kept in the Chief Magistrate Court cell.

He affirms that action will be taken to enforce maximum penalty on the culprits. Accordingly the Commissioner has instructed the authorities to produce a report regarding the incident by 12.00 noon today after identifying the people who were directly or indirectly involved.

An attorney-at-law has complained to Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya about special treatment provided by prison officials to an international drug kingpin Mohamad Siddeek while the suspect was kept in the Chief Magistrate Court cell.

On a tip-off provided by Wele Suda, who is currently in remand on the charges of drug smuggling, Mohammad Siddeek was arrested in Pakistan on the 18th of last March.

The suspect was questioned by the CID for 6 months and was produced before Court yesterday for the first time.

Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya remanded the suspect until October 2nd, and the suspect was given special treatment at the court cell before he was transported back by prison officials.

The prison official also allowed a Muslim to meet the suspect inside the cell.

Having known that our correspondent filmed this scene, the prison officials evacuated Mohamad Siddeek to another cell in the same court complex.

They locked up the Mohamad Siddeek’s visitor as well and took him to the same cell.

However to the surprise of onlookers, the man who was locked up by prison officers walked out freely from the court complex later.

An attorney-at-law Thushara N Daskon who witnessed this scene later complained the incident to the Colombo Chief Magistrate.

When international drug kingpin Mohammad Siddeek was produced before Court yesterday, the CID informed Court that the suspect stayed in India and raised funds for the LTTE.

In addition, details have been revealed that Mohamad Siddeek has maintained close contacts with an LTTE arms dealer Gunasekera alias Kimbula Ale Guna.

CID further informed Court that one kilo and 800 grams of gold was also found from a safety deposit box of a local bank which belonged to the wife of the suspect.

Our news team enquired Prison Commissioner General Rohana Pushpakumara with regard to the special treatment provided by his officers to the suspect.
