A petition has been handed over to the President requesting that the final report of the Maxwell Paranagama Presidential Commission appointed for probing the disappeared during the war, be speedily tabled at the Geneva Human Rights Commission.
The petition was handed over to the President by a team of experts including two Sri Lankan former permanent representatives in Geneva, Dayan Jayatilleke and Thamara Kulanayagam.
Responding to a query on this by our news team Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke said that the Maxwell Paranagama Presidential Commission’s second report should be tabled in Geneva as a response to the proposal UNHRC High Commissioner Prince Seyid Al Hussein had submitted.
Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke said that a group of experts including former Human Rights Ministry Secretary Professor Rajeev Wijesinghe had signed the petition handed over to the President.
One of the tasks assigned to the Maxwell Paranagama Commission appointed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2013 was to find out whether international humanitarian laws had been violated during the last phase of the war.
