The Anuradhapura Railway Control Room announced that 1100 sleepers on the railway track were damaged by a derailment which occurred last evening at Moragoda between Shrawasthipura and Thalawa.

A spokesperson said that the damage was caused by a derailed compartment which had run for about 500m along the line.

A passenger compartment in the middle of the special weekend express train plying from Jaffna to Matara derailed around 2.30 in the afternoon on Sunday, September 20.

However the services in the Northern Railway Line which were disrupted as a result of the derailment have been restored to order by now.
