The General Secretary of one of the UPFA coalitions - Lanka Samasamaja Party Dr. Thissa Vitharana filed a fundamental rights case today challenging the appointment of defeated candidates in the past general election to parliament through the party national list.

45 officials including the Election Commissioner, UPFA General Secretary Vishwa Warnapala and former General Secretary Susil Premajayantha have been named as respondents.

Dr. Vitharana requested the Supreme Court to declare the appointment of national list MPs null and void, and name the petitioner as a national list MP.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Communist Party General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekera, MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardana and its Vice chairman Somaweera Chandrasiri also filed fundamental rights petitions against the appointment of MPs to parliament through the national list.

Meanwhile, in another case, the petitioner’s faction has informed Court today that they would withdraw the case that had been filed against the appointment of Harin Fernando as the Chief Minister of Uva Provincial council.

This petition had been filed by then UPFA PC member and current Chief Minister of Uva Province Chamara Sampath Dasanayake.

Meanwhile bail applications filed by three suspects including UPFA MP Premalal Jayasekera were rejected by Sabaragamuwa Provincial High Court Judge Wasantha Jinadasa today.

The three suspects including Premalal Jayasekera are in remand custody on the charges of shooting a UNP supporter to death.
