Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva instructed the National Transport Commission to suspend immediately the permits given for Southern Highway without calling for tenders.

That was at a discussion held with National Transport Commission staff yesterday.

Similarly the Minister said that the fine imposed on buses plying without route permits should be increased from Rs10k to 100k.

Similarly Minister also paid attention with regard to canteens where long distance buses stop for tea-breaks.

On this occasion the Minister said that these eateries selected based on bus drivers’ requirements were bereft of hygienic facilities and that they sold unhygienic food.

The Minister instructed the officials to take speedy remedial measures with regard to this.
